Finding Work Experience

There are lots of places you can look for work experience. Here are some ideas for places to look with links to specific opportunities and placements at the bottom of the page.

Friends and family often provide the best work experience as they will be willing to put the time into making sure you really understand what is happening and are benefitting from the experience. They are also likely to be able to offer access that you cannot get through more "official" channels.

National work experience schemes also exist and it is worth searching on the internet for opportunities in industries that interest you. Any that the Careers Department are aware of will be added to the events page, or linked below. Most of these are free, but with competitive applications.

Monkton Connect has a large list of alumni and parents who have volunteered to offer you work experience or just to answer your questions about their career and experience. Sixth Form may sign up to Monkton Connect and may ask parents to contact potential mentors on their behalf. Remember that they are giving up their time to help you so be polite, punctual and organised.

Local businesses will often be happy to offer work experience. Never underestimate the power of a polite and interested letter but remember that you may have to approach a significant number of firms and that you will need to do so months rather than days ahead of when you hope the placement to start.

Temping agencies such as Reed Global and Indeed are good sources of temporary or part time work. There are also many local recruiting firms.

Paid work experience is offered by a number of firms. Monkton is beginning a partnership with InvestIn which will offer a discount and access to bursaries for the courses which they run. While often very valuable, courses from paid work experience providers can be expensive so be sure you know what you are getting for your money and, if the courses are being run abroad, check they are run to British/European standards.

Please note that all the opportunities below are from reputable companies or OMs but they have not been vetted by Monkton. You and your parents must be satisfied that they are safe and appropriate. If you want more info on how to go about this, check out this link or speak to the careers department.
